Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari
Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is the world's largest fully fenced eco-sanctuary, spanning 3,400 hectares with a 47 km predator-proof fence. This remarkable conservation project is also a thriving social enterprise, managing tourism, education programmes, a native plant nursery, visitor accommodation, and deep community engagement with three local Iwi.
We want to grow tourism and education, but without visibility we don't know what's working.
The Challenge
Behind Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari's success was a significant challenge: their visitor centre operations relied on nine separate, disconnected systems, including Clubware, Resdy, and Shopify, with no integration whatsoever.
- Critical data was trapped in spreadsheets
- Walk-in visitors and online bookings lived in completely different worlds
- Board reporting was time-consuming and inconsistent, making strategic growth decisions nearly impossible.
The problem was clear: you can't manage what you can't measure. Without a unified view of their operations, Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari couldn't demonstrate impact to funders, identify what was working, or make evidence-based decisions about where to invest their limited resources.
The goal was ambitious but essential: consolidate fragmented data from nine incompatible systems into a single source of truth that would preserve historical records, integrate live operational data, and empower the board with real-time visibility for strategic decision-making.
The Journey
We started with a pragmatic, phased approach, understanding that for a conservation charity operating on tight budgets, proving value quickly was essential.
Phase 1: Historical Data Foundation
We began by ingesting legacy data from Clubware and modelling it into a Data Vault architecture. This preserved years of historical records and made them queryable for the first time, establishing a solid foundation for future growth.
Phase 2: Live Booking Integration
Next, we built pipelines to pull live data from Resdy's API, creating a continuous view of customer activity from past to present. For the first time, the team could see booking trends across different channels and time periods.
Phase 3: Retail Data Connection
We utilised Shopify's GraphQL API to extract retail transactions into clean, accessible tables. This gave immediate visibility into retail performance alongside booking data, two worlds that had never spoken to each other before.
Throughout the project, our team took an agile, curious, and collaborative approach. We started small with a proof of concept using a subset of data first. This demonstrated immediate value and built a solid business case for broader investment, avoiding the risks of a massive upfront rollout.
When requirements evolved, such as the need for immediate Shopify data exploration, we adapted instantly, prioritising practical data access over rigid modelling to suit user needs. We asked deep questions to uncover potential roadblocks early, ensuring the solution wasn't just functional but aligned with Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari's broader conservation mission.
The main thing for me was just agility and flexibility. The team were just awesome to work with... they were bigger than the brief.
We want to grow tourism and education, but without visibility we don't know what's working.
The Destination
We built a unified cloud architecture on Microsoft Azure that brings all of Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari's operational data together for the first time.
At the heart of the solution is Azure Synapse Analytics, which orchestrates all data movement and acts as the control centre. Raw and processed data lives in Azure Data Lake Gen2, cost-effective, scalable storage segregated into zones to manage data lifecycle and history.
We used Data Vault 2.0 methodology to create a flexible, future-proof data model. This approach defines Hubs, Satellites, and Links that ensure the architecture can adapt as Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari's systems evolve, without requiring a complete rebuild.
The modelled data sits in Azure SQL Database, providing high-performance query access for reporting. And the entire platform is designed to power Power BI dashboards in the future, delivering live, auto-refreshing insights for governance and operational decision-making, with self-service analytics so staff can explore trends without IT bottlenecks.
The platform is fully managed by Enlighten, giving Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari enterprise-grade data infrastructure without the overhead of maintaining it themselves.
The Results
For the first time, Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari has a single, accessible platform where historical Clubware data, current Resdy bookings, and Shopify retail transactions live together.
This has unlocked cross-system visibility that was simply impossible before, the team can now analyse booking trends, retail performance, and visitor patterns in ways that were previously trapped across nine disconnected systems.
The phased approach demonstrated immediate value with a subset of data, securing buy-in for future phases without massive upfront risk. We've established a scalable foundation ready to ingest future data sources like staff logs, weather data, volunteer metrics, and education programme tracking.
Perhaps most importantly, the project has driven a culture shift. Staff can now interact with data directly and see the impact of their work, fostering evidence-based decision-making that replaces guesswork and assumptions.
The manual reports created today serve as the blueprint for future live Power BI dashboards. Once Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari's Power BI tenant is established, these insights will transform into auto-refreshing visualisations that give the board and operational teams real-time visibility into what's working and where to focus their efforts.
You can't manage what you can't measure. If you're not looking at your data to improve outcomes, you're not growing your business.
We're at the dawn of this... better integrated systems and a warehouse let us dissect the data.
What's Next
The foundation is in place, and the roadmap ahead is clear. Future phases will expand data sources to include staff attendance logs, weather data, volunteer tracking, and educational programme metrics. We'll continue working towards system consolidation, reducing the number of source systems to ensure data is captured consistently at the point of origin.
Once the Power BI tenant is established, we'll convert manual reports into live, self-service dashboards that empower every business unit to explore data and answer their own questions without IT dependency.
For Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, this isn't just about better reporting, it's about demonstrating measurable conservation impact to funders, making strategic decisions with confidence, and ultimately protecting more native species for generations to come.
