Data proliferation: 90% of the world's data was created in the last two years.
A data warehouse pulls data from line of business applications, transforms and combines it into a data model for easy reporting/analysis through a process called ETL (Extract - Transform - Load). Data warehouses often track changes over time, giving businesses the ability to report changes over time.
Data warehousing projects are typically done for medium to large companies and involve a lot of consulting and working onsite with the customer.
There may also be a SSAS "cube" or tabular model created off the data warehouse to facilitate Excel pivot table queries or for performance of massive data sets.
Skills needed include: requirements gathering, data modelling, documentation, SQL, SSIS, SQL Server, SSAS Multidimensional, SSAS Tabular.
